Charles Marvin  Sanders
Charles Sanders was born June 21, 1932 in Athens, Texas to Ella Drew and Charles M. Sanders, Sr. He was a 1952 graduate of Athens High School. He also attended Henderson County Junior College prior to his 1954 enlistment in the United States Air Force. While in the Air Force he served as a weather observer during the Korean War. In 1955, he married the love of his life, Shirley Dean Jones. After his service in the Air Force he attended the University of Illinois where he completed his Bachelor of Science degree. In 1964, he joined the faculty of Athens High School where he taught Math, Science, and Vocational Education until his retirement in 1991. Charles completed a Master degree at East Texas State University. He held several teaching certifications. He was a long-time member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Athens where he served in numerous leadership roles. Former reserve officer of the Athens Police Department. He was also a member of the Lions Club, Athens Genealogical Society, and the Henderson County Genealogical Society.
Charles passed away Sunday, April 30 following a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his dear wife Shirley. He is survived by his children, Diane and Kenny Bergmann of College Station, Texas; Cynthia Sanders of Athens, Texas, and Sally and Ricky Cribbs of Ovilla, Texas. He is also survived by his granddaughter Kathryn Bergmann of Dallas, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Presbyterian Church of Athens or the Athens Public Education Foundation. Viewing will be Thursday, May 4 at 5:00 pm at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home. A graveside service will be conducted Friday, 5th at 10:00 am at the Oaklawn Memorial Park.
